Tot Ziens Amsterdam

My last two weeks in Amsterdam were pretty much a blur. I tried to harness every last moment I could and imprint it in my mind. I learned so much while traveling this summer about myself and the world around me. It is the most enriching experience to go outside your comfort zone and live life on the edge. I couldn’t have done it without my good friend Paola. I found a lot of what I’m looking for in life in this old city and can’t wait to go back and experience it further. I’ve been back in the states now for about two months and I have to look down at the scars on my knee (from bike falls) to make sure it wasn’t all a dream. Can’t wait to see that city blooming in the spring….

Norway

My trip to Norway started in Oslo where I ate lunch with my cousin Eivind and his wife’s friend at the waterfront. It was a beautiful sunny day and it was the only time I ever felt tempted to jump in Norwegian water.

From Oslo we drove down to Drammen and ate a nice dinner outside with Eivinds’ parents, Bjarne & Kjersti, his wife Kaja and brother Håkon.

The next morning I began the 7 hour drive across the southern part of the country with Bjarne and Håkon. But not before I tried ‘brown cheese’ for the first time. It is a Norwegian staple and ate mostly on bread with jelly. It became a favorite of mine and I made sure to eat it every morning while there. Bjarne even got me a book ‘Brown Cheese Please’ that he gave to me before I left! We departed after breakfast and made a few scenic stops along the way that included 2 waterfalls, fjords, and a glacier.

Perfect place for a coffee break

Our final destination was Bergen, where my cousin Ingvild lives and goes to school. We spent 2 nights there-saw the fish market, the famous small houses, went to the top of Fløyen which gave us a great view of the city/fjords, & experienced some terrible nightlife!

After Bergen my cousin Håkon and I took the bus & a ferry to Stavanger to meet some more cousins. We walked through Old Stavanger, which was one of my favorite places in Norway. It looked a bit like how I picture Greece to be-white houses with lots of flowers and narrow cobble-stoned streets. Håkon and I also found time to hike Pulpit Rock. It took us roughly four hours roundtrip. I was impressed with my endurance and found that my new ‘bike legs’ from Amsterdam were suiting me well. Needless to say the views were stunning and we had great weather.

Ragnhild and I

After staying two nights in Stavanger we took yet another bus/ferry ride to Kristiansand. There we hitched a ride with Bjarne and Kjersti to Fleseid (the family vacation home) where Grandma and Grandpa (Kristin & Torstein) were awaiting our arrival. This was quite special since I don’t have any memory of meeting them when I was 3. They are the sweetest grandparents and their stories were quite riveting. As someone who has just one grandparent still alive in a nursing home in the States, it was a welcoming experience to be in their presence and a bit heartbreaking to think it could be the only time. I cherished it and made sure to take pictures with them. Fleseid seemed like a very quintessential Norwegian seaside village. It reminded me a lot of Maine with all its nooks and crannies. We took a very wet, cold boat ride one afternoon to the place where my cousins have been stopping for ice cream every summer since they were small. It was cute but deserted at this time of year. So no ice cream for us! Not a problem because the grandparents had plenty of apple desserts on hand…Norway must have put 10 pounds on me.

Vigelandsparken in Oslo

My last two nights were spent back in Drammen. I visited the Norsk Folkemuseum & Vigelandsparken Sculpture Park in Oslo. The park had well over 100 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland. If you’re not familiar with his work I’ll tell you it is worth looking up. It depicts human emotion through the circle of life. We had a lot of fun interpreting the scenes around one fountain. And of course ended the visit with an apple dessert in the park’s fancy cafe overlooking a pond. We had endless good meals including a lunch at Glass on the Drammen waterfront. Kjersti and I had huge shrimp salads that were delicious! I had such a wonderful time visiting and meeting my Norwegian family. While it was sad to say goodbye to them I had a lot to look forward to back in Amsterdam…

Oui Oui Paris

We had a magical trip to Paris! The initial intent of our trip was to meet up with our friend from Miami, Shannon. We never imagined we would also run into our former employer (also from Miami) in the middle of Center Pompidou and end up with a private, chauffeured tour of the city at an hour when there were virtually no tourists. Parfait! We soaked up some culture, made friends with locals, shopped, laid out on the Paris Plages, and the list goes on and on. In only 4 days we made a lot of memories. But back to Amsterdam, which we figured out is a city we are both more suited to. Like Paola always says, “Without comparison there is no value.”

Eats & Treats

Had my 1st Dutch pancake today at The Pancake Bakery on Prinsengracht. It was a Brasilian Pancake with pecan-caramel ice cream, mocca/caramel sauce, almonds, amaretto, & whipped cream.

Goat cheese on pumpkin topped with figs and pomegranate seeds and stuffed with spinach. The food case at Raïnaraï, an Algerian restaurant. It’s great-you pick your beer or bottle of wine out of the cooler and then you can choose from couscous, mixed rice, fish, meats, lots of vegetables and the beautiful thing I had(not sure of the name). We had Lebanese beer, Almaza. The smell coming from this place was out of this world. Not to mention you sit outside on the little roof and it’s canal side.

Dutch Life

Today we biked to the Jordaan district. It was originally a working-class neighborhood but has become one of the most expensive, upscale locations in the Netherlands. There were a ton of art galleries, little shops, and restaurants. We passed the Anne Frank Huis as well, which had a mile-long line. From there we walked to the Red Light District so I could see the block on which an 800 year old church and multiple sex shops exist simultaneously! That must be a convenience for some people (!) It is definitely a place I’d like to go back to see lit up at night.  I mean we’re in Amsterdam right?

One of the vintage shops we went in, Het Grote Avontuur, was so cool. Check out their site: http://hetgroteavontuur.nl/category/verse-vintage/

The maps were a favorite of mine..

Het Grote Avontuur

They had this line of books that I read as a child. I recognized them Dutch titles and all because they have a  gold binding that used to captivate me. The stubborn puppy was one of my favorites!!!

A Day at the Beach

Image

Over the weekend we took a ferry from Amsterdam Centraal to IJMuiden for a beach party at Paviljoen. Paolas’ friends were dj-ing so I got to meet them and even made some new friends of my own! We had a great time dancing and partied until the sun came up…Riding a bike home after a night like that as opposed to say taking a cab or walking is a huge change for me! I think that is the determining element in Amsterdam-Paola says that life here revolves around the park, but I’d say life revolves around the bike. This is where we left ours before we boarded the ferry…

Here at last…

Experienced a great flight into Amsterdam. I had some issues trying to get a train ticket at the kiosk (as did quite a few other people so I didn’t feel so bad) A very nice dutch man was helping me and ended up buying my ticket!

When finally reunited with my friend at Amsterdam Zuid Station it was a huge relief. We decided to forego taking the tram the rest of the way to her apartment and were actually able to walk there, luggage and all! Passed by the World Trade Center and some very modern buildings and then began the quintessential Dutch homes. They are just as beautiful in person as in photographs. Right off the bat I was amazed at how clean of a city this is.

Paola got me all situated with my own bike for the summer and we spent the day biking and walking through Vondelpark and numerous squares, or pleins. There were many people and sights to see but since it is my first day here we kind of skimmed over it all just so I have an idea of the layout.

Now it’s about 9:45 PM and is still bright as day outside! Time to get some rest and relax so we can explore more tomorrow. Forgot what it’s like to sleep in a noisy city. Wish I brought those dang ear plugs with me…
